Curriculum Overview
Math: Text, Saxon Math 3. One lesson will be covered each day. A lesson will be instructed by the teacher and an assignment will be given each day. A test will be given every 5th lesson. Hands on activities are implemented in our math lessons. Students are responsible to learn math facts in, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Timed test are given daily. Math facts are drilled in class, but students need to have additional help at home.
Reading: Text, McGraw Hill. The text is accompanied by both a skills and phonics workbook. We introduce vocabulary each week and work on comprehension skills. Additional skills are learned each week. Example: Sequencing, Using Parts of a Book, story element, making predictions, compound words, and problem and solution, etc. A Unit Assessment is given at the end of each unit. We have a review week and read an additional AR book in class for the children to test on. Some of the books we use are: Because of Winn Dixie, Chocolate Touch, Chocolate Fever, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, etc. Each child is required to read two AR books per week and test on these books. This is recorded on a Student Reading Log and initialed by the teacher after each student has tested on their book.
Spelling: Text, McGraw-Hill Spelling. This consumable book is a component of our reading curriculum. Each of the lessons have 20 spelling words. Five of these words are the challenge words. A pretest is given on Monday and a final test is given on Friday. A review lesson is given at the end of each unit consisting of 25 review words.
Language: Test, Houghton Mifflin Language. This program will consist of Grammar Usage and mechanics: Unit 1, the sentence, Unit 2, Nouns, Unit 3, Verbs, Unit 4, Adjectives and Adverbs, Unit 5, Capitalization and Punctuation, and Unit 6, Pronouns. We also have writing implemented into out Language program. Students will learn how to write a personal narrative, story writing, writing to express and opinion, and writing to persuade. Extra practice and reteach lessons are given. Also, a Unit Assessment is given at the end of each unit.
Bible: Text, Grow With God. This series includes The Bible—Our manual for spiritual growth. We begin with the Bible is God’s Word, and the parts of The Bible. Then we study the Life of Abraham, The Life of Jacob, The Life of Joseph, and The Life of Daniel. A quiz and Bible memory work will be part of each weekly lesson.
Science: Text, McGraw –Hill Science; Hands-On Science, Carolina Biological Supply Company. Our units of study include: Chemical Tests, Nutrition, Rocks and Minerals, Solar System, and Plant Growth and Development. The students experience many hands-on laboratories as well as field trips to enhance our studies. Students will learn to work in groups, predict, collect data, record results, and think critically throughout the year. They will be given tests periodically to see if they have mastered new concepts.
Social Studies: Text-Macmillian/McGraw-Hill-“Our Communities” 2003. This series contains reading skills and strategies to support understanding and improve standardized test scores. The vocabulary helps students focus and improve comprehension. Reading check questions provide ongoing assessments to monitor student progress. Maps, charts, graphs, photos, and illustrations help students learn and organize social studies content. Study skills and geography skills are taught throughout the curriculum. Citizenship is taught to encourage students to make a difference in our democracy using real-life models. Unit and chapter reviews and test are used to monitor student progress and to promote success on standardized test.
Art, Music, P.E., Computers, and Spanish are taught each week.
